The fourth edition of the Glacier Caravan started on 20 August in Italy and ended on 10 September in Switzerland. In six stages, participants visited the glaciers of Rutor (Aosta Valley/Italy), Belvedere (Piedmont/Italy), Dosdè (Lombardy/Italy), Mandrone (Trentino/Italy), Ochsentaler (Vorarlberg/Austria) and Morteratsch (Grisons/Switzerland). The campaign, conducted by Legambiente in scientific collaboration with the Italian Glaciological Commission, took on an international dimension in 2023 through collaboration with CIPRA.

Experts and glaciologists from various countries took part in each stage, observing how all Alpine glaciers are inexorably retreating as a result of global warming. In Austria, the Glacier Caravan team met young activists from CIPRA International’s Alpine Climate Camp project. On the Swiss stage, an international conference with glaciologists from every Alpine country and a round table were held at the Salecina resort, where a manifesto for Alpine glacier management was presented and discussed.

“The glaciers in the Alps are in crisis and the climate crisis knows no borders”, says Vanda Bonardo, National Director of Legambiente in the Alps and President of CIPRA Italy. “We have taken up this issue and spoken out so as to inform people and institutions and make them aware of the impact of the climate crisis at high altitudes.”
