The climate is changing – in the Alpine region too. According to the currently available scenarios, further warming and altered precipitation patterns may be expected. This affects the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events and, hence also, the threat posed by natural hazards. Scientists and researchers largely agree on this general trend. However, a degree of uncertainty still prevails in relation to the possible regional and seasonal developments. The spectrum is broad. Depending on the location, the risks posed by floods, landslides, avalanches and storm winds may not only increase, they could also decrease – in both cases at varying levels of intensity.
