RE-PEAT-it!

Peatlands provide valuable ecosystem functions in the Alps, but drainage, intensive land use and the climate crisis are placing them under growing pressure. The RE-PEAT-it! project strengthens knowledge, cooperation, and the capacity to act on peatland conservation across the Alpine region.

Peatlands are true all-rounders of the Alps. They store carbon, regulate water cycles and provide habitats for rare animal and plant species. This makes them essential for climate action and biodiversity protection. However, historical drainage, intensive land use, and the climate crisis are putting these ecosystems under increasing pressure.

To address these challenges, RE-PEAT-it! brings together experts from research, nature conservation, public administration and practice. The project strengthens knowledge, cooperation and operational capacity across the Alpine region. It develops and tests practical solutions for peatland restoration, brings together lessons learned in the Alpine Peatland Action Plan, and shares knowledge with practitioners, public authorities, and policymakers.

Ultimately, the project aims to reduce pressure on Alpine peatlands, deliver effective solutions for their protection and restoration, and contribute to long-term climate and biodiversity resilience across the Alpine region.
