Apr 18, 2013 / alpMedia
Lecco, the capital of the province of the same name, has this year been selected as the "Alpine Town of the Year 2013". The opening ceremony took place at the beginning of April and the initiatives for the Alpine Town Year were briefly presented.

The town of Lecco daily attracts large numbers of commuters from the Lombardy province of the same name. Questions about ecologically compatible mobility and the improvement of air quality are thus particularly pertinent. Lecco, recently selected as "Alpine Town of the Year 2013" will therefore be expanding initiatives that have already proven their worth: the "Piedibus", with which some 650 children walk to school and thus save an annual total of eight tonnes of CO2, is now to be offered in the afternoons. The network of cycle paths and the "bike sharing" scheme are also to be expanded.
Lecco continues to emphasise incentives for climate-friendly building and intends to convert its public lighting to more energy-efficient LED systems. One final theme of the Alpine Town Year is water: the purification plant is being modernised and increased in size, while the local population is being made aware of measures for the prudent management of water as a limited resource. Lecco is in addition renaturing three small rivers that flow through the town and into the lake, while a scientific conference on water and climate change is planned for the end of October.
