Fréjus: end of the road for the “Alpine motorway on rails”
After an 18-month closure caused by a landslide, the beginning of April 2025 saw the first passenger trains once more running through the Fréjus railway tunnel connecting Italy and France. The transport of trucks on freight trains has not been resumed, however.

GOVQoL – Empowering Alpine communities to improve their quality of life
Alpine communities’ quality of life (QoL) is currently facing several challenges such as the depopulation of remote areas, reduced provision of services of general interest, the impacts of climate change, and mistrust of governance. These issues are not only reshaping the Alpine territories but also impacting the daily lives of its inhabitants. Despite the urgent need for responsive and inclusive governance, there is currently a significant gap in understanding and addressing QoL at the local level which our project aims to address.

Theory of Change
Theory of Change (ToC) is a method for organising ideas. It describes objectives as the desired changes one wishes to see and makes it explicit how these changes can be achieved. CIPRA’s Theory of Change sets out the changes we wish to see in the Alps and for the Alps, and represents our ideas – our theory – for how these changes can be generated. This theory will guide where and how CIPRA acts directly or indirectly, based on the knowledge we have today.

C3S User engagement workshop with the Alpine user community
The Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), with the support of the Alpine Convention, is organising an online workshop dedicated to the use of climate data and services in the Alpine region. The workshop will take place on Tuesday, 11th March 2025. This half-day event is designed for scientists, policy officers, and practitioners who use or are interested in using C3S data for their work in the field of climate change.

Mindful hiking through snow and silence
A snowshoe hike in the Liechtenstein Alps: under the guidance of a hiking guide, young adults experienced a sustainable form of winter sport, practised mindfulness and raised their environmental awareness.
