My first summer holiday in Val Venosta and Val Senales dates back to the early Nineties. And I have been spellbound since then. I have gone back to those valleys again and again where I discovered mountain farming, with its farmsteads, its culture, its folklore and … transhumance. In June 1996, my Nikons and I set off on an extraordinary adventure where I was able to combine two of my passions: one for the mountain, one for photography. For twelve years I have gone with the flocks and the shepherds who in late spring set off from Val Venosta and Val Senales for the summer pastures of Ötztal. Every time, it was a different, spectacular event, decisively affected by the weather, which might change abruptly, unexpectedly, but neither rain nor snow or frost can stop that centuries-old journey of men and animals worn down by sweat and exhaustion. It was a unique, unrepeatable experience that has enriched me both professionally and humanly. I will never forget the shepherds’ and their companions’ attachment to this ancient tradition but above all the great love they feel for their animals. I met some exceptional people and I am glad I have become friends with some of them.
And the journey goes on …
