Kaspar Schuler: new strength for the Alps
Kaspar Schuler, 59, has successfully performed various functions for the benefit of sustainable development: as an Alpine herdsman and dairyman, in the association of environmental organisations in the canton of Graubünden, at Greenpeace and as a freelance organisation developer. As the former long-time regular director of Greenpeace Switzerland, he was instrumental in growing the organisation from its origins as an activism-oriented movement into a widely respected environmental body.
With his appointment as director of CIPRA, the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps, based in Schaan, Liechtenstein, Kaspar Schuler will from now on be fully focused on the Alps. «There are two forms of conduct that are absolutely central when being in the mountains: standing together with the community, and finding your own way from there», he states. «In this European sense, I look forward to contributing to the sustainable development of the Alpine regions.» His particular concern is that all denizens – people, animals and plants – should be assured of a good life while maintaining their diversity.
Kaspar Schuler is expected to take over the leadership of CIPRA International in June 2018. He succeeds Andreas Pichler from South Tyrol, who in June will be taking on a new challenge in Vorarlberg, Austria. Andreas has been with CIPRA since 2015 and has significantly assisted in the further development of the organisation, in particular in the evolution of a new strategy and the securing of funding.
«We are convinced that Kaspar Schuler will continue the excellent work done by Andreas Pichler and strengthen the position of CIPRA as an advocate for a sustainable future for the Alps,» underlines Katharina Conradin, President of CIPRA International.
