NATUREMADE

naturemade star stands for 100 % renewable energy which in addition respects ecological criteria

naturemade is a quality seal, developed in Switzerland, for energy generated only from renewable sources (water, sun and biomass) with a clear designation of origin. Certification covers power, heating and biomethane. The seal is awarded by the Association for Environmentally Sound Energy (VUE).

I Description of the measure

Title in original language: naturemade

Location of CNA: Switzerland

Municipality / regional entity: nationwide

Category of the experience: Strategy
Type(s) of CNA:

Principal nomination: Technological

Thematic field(s):

Principal field: Transport

Spatial scale: Local
Time & duration:

Start date: 1999 (VUE was established)
Duration: ongoing

Key word(s): certification, quality label, renewable energies

Objectives:

1) To promote new, renewable energy sources and ecological energy products 2) To develop scientific criteria for the evaluation of ecological energy products 3) To take on further tasks related to the promotion of environmentally sound electricity, especially cooperation with other organizations in Switzerland and abroad

Activities:

Development, dissemination and application of certification procedures. The naturemade seal has two quality levels: naturemade basic is for energy from exclusively renewable sources. naturemade star certified energy products must fulfill ecological criteria in addition to the naturemade basic criteria. On the one hand global criteria must be met for the life cycle of the generating plant; on the other local/regional criteria must be met. naturemade power requires new solar, biomass and wind energy facilities for new renewable energy supplies. 5% of each kWh of naturemade power must have the naturemade star certificate and at least half of that must be produced by new renewable energy sources. Energy production and supply are certified separately.

Results:

Certified facilities and products (per 15 Nov. 2011): Energy production: 11'733 GWh/a (of which 2'103 GWh/a with naturemade star) Energy supply: 2'593 GWh/a (of which 736 GWh/a with naturemade star)

II Assessment criteria

Mitigation effects: Very high

The production and purchase of energy certified by naturemade makes a valuable contribution to ecologization and the sustainable use of resources. The higher the production and purchases of ecopower, the greater the ecological share in the overall energy mix. This means reduced dependence on fossil and nuclear energy sources and reduced CO2 emissions (no concrete data have been published).

Impacts on adaptation: Positive

Naturemade means energy generated with respect for nature. In the end this might also help to increase the adaptability of the natural systems in question .

Impacts on environment:

- Landscape: Positive
- Alpine ecosystems / biodiversity: Positive
- Water / soil / air: Positive
- "Other": None

All energy production has an impact on the environment, but the criteria of naturemade guarantee that renewable energy production is expanded in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible. For every kWh of power from hydro or sewage treatment plants, 0,01 CHF flows into a fund for ecological improvements. By 2010 about 8 million CHF had been invested in the revitalisation, interlinking and creation of water bodies and habitats.

Impacts on society:

- Social justice: Neutral
- Regional / cultural identity: Neutral
- "Other": None

-

Impacts on economy:

- Employment / job creation: Neutral
- Added value / income: Neutral
- Know how / competitiveness: Positive
- "Other": None

Contribution to the transition to renewable energy. Economic effects depend on many factors, such as the development of energy prices, political framework conditions (e.g. subsidies). The expansion of renewable energy sources stimulates the accumulation of experience and know-how by the actors involved.

Public relations impact and awareness-raising: Very high

The certificate is fairly widely known and has a relatively high media presence. Certified energy products are sold by prominent enterprises in the energy branch. Organization of an annual trade event (naturemade energy arena) Organization of an annual contest (naturemade prize)

Transferability: Very high

The seal with the naturemade- specific requirements could easily be introduced in other countries (to an extent this is happening already)

Cross sectoral and integrative approach: High

Significant contribution to the transition to renewable energy. Focus on (new) renewable types of energy and ecological energy products, clear guidelines and criteria, differentiation between climate and nature protection.

Good governance: High

Naturemade has wide support. Members of the Verein für umweltgerechte Energie (VUE) include major energy producers and suppliers, new renewable energy associations, environmental and cosumer organizations as well as major energy consumers.

III Executive body and contact information

Executive body: Organizations of civil society

The Verein für umweltgerechte Energie (VUE) has a wide range of members: environmental and consumer organizations, renewable energy associations, major energy consumers and large, medium and small energy suppliers and producers are all represented in VUE and on its board.
