LANDRAD is a research project on the usage and functionality of Pedal Electric Cycles (Pedelecs). The main question was how Pedelecs can be used in everyday life and how effective pedelecs are in relation to normal car usage. Individuals and institutions (communities, companies etc.) participated in this research. Once per quarter they answerd questions about their daily mobility routine and gave to the Kairos gGmbh the data of their Pedelec-controll system.

One of the main goals was to determine the potential of pedelecs to replace cars in the daily mobility routine. Other important questions were: How high is the markt potential of Pedelecs in Vorarlberg? Which measures are nessecary to encourage cycling in Vorarlberg?


In 2008 Kairos presented the LANDRAD project to the regional administration. The regional government was very interested and supportet the LANDRAD project financially. 25 local bicycle dealers supported the project and they organised the distribution to the individual testers. Between July and November 2008 Kairos tested 25 different types of Pedelecs. Finally they decided to use one and make a limited LANDRAD edition with some specifications and 500 Pedelecs for the test phase. In May 2009 the first LANDRAD Pedelecs were distributed. Bevor the last shipment came to Vorarlberg all LANDRAD Pedelecs were sold and the test phase started.


The main result of the LANDRAD project was that Pedelec is the perfect technology to replace automobiles in their daily use on short distances. The technology has enough facination to start a rethinking process on the daily mobility routine. Furthermore, the additional advantage of pedelecs is high enough to ensure their daily usage.

Alltough the project LANDRAD started a boom for Pedelecs in Vorarlberg and many people changed their daily routine and used Pedelecs instead of cars the overall CO2 emission polluted by the traffic could not be reduced. (Energiebericht)

Cycling needs much less infrastrucutre than car traffic and many people changed their daily habits concerning car usage, by using their bike. More cycling also means less pollution which improves air quality and reduces the stress for the regional ecosystems.

Social justice: The Pedelec boom encouraged many older people to start cycling again. Regional identity: The benchmark "LANDRAD" encouraged many people to show their enthusiasm and commitment for the traffic-related problems in Vorarlberg.

After the LANDRAD project the sale volume of Pedelecs went up for several 100 % and in three years Pedelecs became one of the most important branches for the bicycle dealers in Vorarlberg.

Many people started to rethink their daily mobility routine and started to use their bikes and new Pedelecs more often. Furthermore, the local media was very commited to this project and there were several articles on alternative mobility in the newspapers.

Necessary conditions: a dedicated Institution (like Kairos), cooperation with local infrastructure (bicycle dealers etc.), accompanying research and financial investment for the project administration and the testers.
