Objectives:

Reduction of cars traffic in some areas and villages. New touristic offer (slow tourism) : discovering sites and villages with a new means of transportation. Take time to discover. Democratize cycling in moutain area where it is normally reserved to trained cyclists.

Activities:

The service has been delegated to a sport shop renting bicycles. The collectivity has launch a call for the purchase, the management and the maintenance of the bicycles on the whole territory. The sport shop was in charge of putting at disposal the bicycles in the place the collectivity decided in agreement with voluntary tourism professionals, and in charge of organising the maintenance. The tourist hosts involved in the project had the responsability of managing the loan of bicycles by writing down basic informations on a small document (identity of the borrower, duration of walk…). The bicycles were borrowed for one to few hours.

Results:

According to the success of use, the reduction of car traffic can be assume, but no specific follow-up has been done. Satisfaction of users has been analysed by small questionnaires. The service has been used for two purposes. The first one is for a real utility of movement, per example for people staying in camping sites without car, or tourists coming in Queyras without cars. The second purpose is more linked to leisure, for example visiting touristic sites or mountain passes, or simply by curiosity of testing an electrical bicycle.

Mitigation effects: Low

The CNA avoid some CO2 emission on the territory, but the amount is low and has not been quatified. The effect seeks is also examplarity and concious awareness. We hope it can gives good feeling to people using the bicycles during their holidays and they will maybe think about this means of transportation in their every day life.

Developpement of a new activity for the profesionnal putting the bikes at disposal and maintaining them. New skills localy developped in electric bicycles functionning, maintenance…

People are using and driving themselves. Sensation of autonomy and ludic way of transportation which convince most of the users. Gives a different image to bicycle, and makes people considering roads use with a new point of view.
