Good Practice

Sattel steps on the gas - but in a carbon-neutral way : new approach for a sustainable tourism

Most of the greenhouse gas emissions from transport in the Alps are due to motorised road traffic (93%), with the majority caused by leisure and tourist traffic. That is why the municipality wants to tackle the issue of tourist travel to the holiday destination. CO2 emissions also occur in many other areas of the tourism value added chain. So Sattel is seeking to draw up a climate mission statement for tourism, with objectives and specific tourist offers.

Aims

The Municipality of Sattel is looking to make its tourism offer carbon-neutral. Its intentions are to be set out in a climate mission statement for tourism, formulating and implementing new offers at the same time. The Alliance municipality of Werfenweng is to act as partner and role model for the project's development. The Werfenweng model is to be analysed and adapted to Sattel's local circumstances. An initial opportunity to discuss the plans for the project with players in the tourism industry is the seminar held in Sattel titled "Diversification in Tourism" (see annex flyer) on 23.11.2010.

Involved

The municipality of Werfenweng is a member of AIDA and a pioneer in the area of gentle tourism mobility; it is a role model and has agreed to act as partner. Within the entire process the tourism service providers need to be well integrated; while this is already the case with the railways and cableways (Sattel Hohstuckli AG), special attention needs to be focused on hoteliers. A key player is the Aegerital-Sattel Tourist Board and "Holidays without cars".

Financing

dynAlp-climate: 10.000€, others: Schweizer Berghilfe and Regionalverband Rigi Mythen.
