Aerial view trees and shrubs. It is possible to assess the overall planning of green areas in the town of Mäder.

In a borough of just 320 hectares, with over 1,000 inhabitants/km², space use has a particular value. First planning: Planting of woods 1974: around 70,000 trees and shrubs planted. Green plan 1984: for the dwelling area with the following tasks: · Configuration of the dwelling area. · Ensuring the use of free areas. · Strengthening the nature balance in the dwelling area. Town development plan (Lokale Agenda 21) 1991/92: definition of sustainability objectives. Space development concept (drafted in 2001 in an open planning process) various nature protection actions have been defined, like ensuring green spaces, reduction of built areas, filling of empty spaces in the dwelling area, careful traffic access, reduction of compacted surfaces.
The municipality purchased an iris meadow in the middle of the town centre.

Aims

As part of DYNALP the town green plan must be subject to assessment. At the same time, heritage is digitally recorded and care and use plans are being drafted. Existing green areas and elements must be protected and further developed.

Realization

In the wake of this examination, the central green space is being reactivated, the pond is being cleaned. New uses are defined together.
The central iris field (around 0.25 ha) is strengthened, a concept for the existing school garden (around 800 m²) is being drafted.
The shrubs in the country (length of the shrubs around 15 km, around 2 km of which in the dwelling area) are categorized in the various segments based on type, mix degree, development stage, age, structure and specificity; other natural elements (small biotopes, natural riverbank slopes etc.) are recorded.

Impact

Together with all the participants the green space in Mäder is being strengthened. This way extensive identification with this nature element emerges. The green space is reinforced, threatened species are protected, new living areas created. The characterising elements of the tall trees are preserved.
