The Wolf Is Here: An Exhibition about People

Biwak#19 presents the views of people whose jobs bring them into contact with wolves – ranging from gamekeepers to genetic analysts.

The Bivouac “The Wolf Is Here” is not an exhibition about the animal itself and its cultural history, but rather about people and their emotionally-charged debates concerning the return of the wolves. These debates are actually part of a larger discourse about such issues as migration, security, city and countryside, the future of mountainous regions, and ecological sustainability. The Bivouac takes as its starting point the cliché of the “good” wolf and the “bad” wolf. It presents the views of people whose jobs bring them into contact with wolves – ranging from gamekeepers to genetic analysts. Along the way we encounter the wolf: as registered, functioning, anthropomorphized, subversive. A project in close cooperation with the Swiss National Science Foundation research project “Wölfe: Wissen und Praxis” (Wolves: Knowledge and Practice) of the Institute for Social Anthropology and Empirical Cultural Studies at Zurich University.
