[Project completed] To have a say in Alpine policy, to bring in own topics, to exchange ideas with EU politicians: The "Youth.shaping.EUSALP" project makes young people’s and young adults’ voices heard and develops a concrete strategy for the commitment of the youth within the EUSALP. © CIPRA International

Under the motto "youth.shaping.EUSALP", the Tyrol Region, which held the presidency of EUSALP in 2018, the Foreign Office in Liechtenstein and the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE) are working together to involve young people more closely in the EU Strategy for the Alpine Space (EUSALP). Young people are to participate in discussions on Alpine topics that directly affect their living and working environment. Their voices should not only be heard from time to time, the youth should become well renowned and highly acknowledged stakeholders with impactful opinions and considerations.

Building on the ideas collected at the first EUSALP Youth Congress in Munich in November 2017, the Tyrolean Presidency invited young people to a workshop in Innsbruck in November 2018 in the frame of the EUSALP Annual Forum. A second workshop will be organised on 29th and 30th March 2019 in Liechtenstein. The long-term goal is an action plan that will be approved by the EUSALP General Assembly, the political level of EUSALP and anchored in the future activities of EUSALP. CIPRA International and the Alpine Town of the Year Association support the development of an action plan for young people's involvement in the EUSALP strategy.

Workshop 1 - 19 November 2018 in Innsbruck/A

A participation platform, a summer camp, the direct interaction between EUSALP representatives and schools and the participation of youth representatives in EUSALP meetings: these were the results of the first workshop in Innsbruck, which was attended by 20 young people from all over the Alpine region.

Workshop 2 - 29 and 30 March in Schaan/Liechtenstein

In a second step, 30 young people from all over the Alpine region discussed and worked together with EUSALP representatives on the concretisation of the ideas and strategy from the first workshop. The ideas of the young people should now be carried into the EUSALP and put into practice in order to ensure that future generations can help shape their Alpine habitat.

Expert Study 2020

The aim is to involve young people in EUSALP activities and give them a say in shaping their living space. CIPRA International is accompanying the youth.shaping.EUSALP process together with the organisations Anacej and Valmonti and the moderator Nicoletta Piersantelli. They have carried out a study as part of the project. It contains an alpine-wide research on youth organisations, good examples in the field of communication and governance as well as strategic recommendations for the EUSALP.

Workshop 3 - 5 February 2020 in Lyon/France

How can the EU Strategy for the Alpine Space reach young people? What structures are needed for sustainable participation? These and other questions were discussed by EUSALP representatives at a workshop held on the occasion of the French EUSALP Presidency in Lyon/F. In a participatory process, they developed proposals such as an EUSALP Youth Council or an app for the participation of young people on specific topics.
