Alpstar

Making the Alps a carbon-neutral region by 2050 was the objective of the Alpine Space Project ALPSTAR, Towards Carbon-neutral Alps – Making Best Practice the Minimum Standard. Together 13 partners from the Alpine region came up with ways of effectively reducing CO2 emissions in the Alpine region. Together with the project partners, CIPRA used Alpstar to contribute its share to implementing the Alpine Convention’s climate action plan, a plan which it had initiated itself.

Alpine Rhine Valley pilot region

The Alpstar Alpine Rhine Valley pilot region investigated what is required to get commuters to travel to work by bus, train or bike instead of by car. The partners involved were Liechtenstein, the Austrian state of Vorarlberg and the Swiss Canton of St. Gallen. Activities were co-ordinated by CIPRA International and the Vorarlberg Energy Institute.

Relaxed on the way to work

The attempt to persuade commuters to switch to sustainable forms of transport is nothing new. What is new about the activities in the Alpine Rhine Valley was the methodological style and cross-border approach. Working with employees from the pilot company, Hilti AG – based in Schaan, Liechtenstein – and the commuter towns of Buchs in Switzerland and Feldkirch in Austria, the partners introduced a bespoke mobility campaign. Commuters were addressed at various levels: the personal, the social and by means of information on infrastructures and the overall framework.
