60 years of CIPRA

May 14, 2014
CIPRA has been connecting people, projects and organisations for over 60 years across linguistic, cultural, geographical and political borders. In 2012, its anniversary year, CIPRA has again brought together people who are committed to sustainable development in the Alps, with ceremonies being held at its place of establishment, Rottach-Egern in Germany and at the AlpWeek in Valposchiavo, Switzerland; on the Alpine Power trek through the Alps and at various festivities in the Alpine countries. Many of those present took the opportunity to engage with CIPRA representatives, associates and people, to observe examples of good and bad practice, to discuss possible solutions – and to join in the celebrations.

Review of ceremonies in Rottach-Egern and Poschiavo

The anniversary celebrations kicked off on 5th May 2012 in Rottach-Egern in Germany, at the same place where, exactly 60 years ago, CIPRA was founded by a number of committed and concerned people.

Review of Alpine Power

1st July 2012 saw the start of the Alpine Power transalpine trek at the Austrian-Slovenian border. Numerous other borders were crossed, with birthday celebrations taking place in all of the Alpine countries until the trek ended back in Slovenia with a concluding ceremony on 19th October.

Review of 60 years of CIPRA

Also at the celebrations in Rottach-Egern was CIPRA co-founder Wolfgang Burhenne, who has spent his whole life working for nature and who entertained with his impressions of the changes and successes in environmental matters. While his words were not recorded, the images speak for themselves.
