On 7 and 8 November 2005 representatives of the eight member states of the Alpine Convention attended a seminar on the creation of an ecological network of protected areas to debate the possibilities for establishing an ecological network spanning the Alps. The alpMedia dossier entitled "Ecological Networks" drawn up on that occasion provides an overview of the instruments that play an important role in the establishment of ecological networks at the global, pan-European, European and national levels.

The web site of the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps CIPRA-International recently underwent a complete makeover. Information on CIPRA and its member organisations is now posted in a trendier layout at www.cipra.org , with items such as News, Events (e.g. Summer Academy or Annual Conference), Activities, Publications and Positions.

As of November a new Commissioner at the European Union is to be officially responsible for the Alpine Convention. Stavros Dimas, currently Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, is to take over as Commissioner for the Environment.

The Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention is getting a new head. In March 2013 the Austrian Markus Reiterer, diplomat and Alpine enthusiast, will replace the previous Secretary-General Marco Onida.

Out for gigantic Brenner wind farm

It was supposed to have been the highest wind farm in the Alps. Now a court has revoked the building permit for the wind turbines on the Sattelberg Mountain - referring also to the Alpine Convention in the grounds for its decision.
