Workshop: The contribution of rural commons for thriving mountain community economies

We propose to conceptualize forms of collective management of resources, goods and services in mountains as rural commons, taking good care of mountains, which together build a global common good. We also conceptualize them as being enacted through commoning and community economies practice: economic practices in which the interdependence between humans, other species and the environment are recognized and ethically negotiated.

The workshop’s leading questions are:

  • What examples of new practices of commoning and community economies are there, which contribute to the creation of resilient and empowering commons?
  • How can traditional commons be innovated to thrive in contemporary conditions so that they can continue to be agents of liveable alpine territories?
  • Who are the new stewards and activators of the commons?

This research and practice exchange workshop will enable active discussions and talks among researchers and practicioners dealing with these topics and questions.
