Alpine Convention acts as a guide for the Dinaric Alps

Nov 05, 2009 / alpMedia
CIPRA Slovenia has successfully completed its project entitled "Knowledge transfer in the area of sustainable development from the Alpine Convention to the municipality of Mojkovac in Montenegro". The project provides a good starting point for the comprehensive promotion of nature conservation and sustainable development in the Dinaric mountain range.

CIPRA Slovenia and local authority representatives of Mojkovac first flagged up specific areas in which the Montenegrin municipality could expand nature conservation and sustainable development. They include the rehabilitation of an old mine and its development for tourist purposes as well as establishing local protected area management. CIPRA Slovenia also showcased the Alpine Convention, its work method and its networks, as well as examples of best practice from the Alpine region.
There are similarities between the Alps and the Dinaric mountain range. Both mountain ranges boast a great biological diversity. The Dinarides are also confronted with problems similar to those encountered by the Alpine states: the depopulation of mountain areas, the development of areas of unspoilt nature, and forms of tourism that are unsustainable.
