After an initial discussion and postponement at the beginning of December 2019, the transport ministers of the EU states have again postponed the discussion on the redesign of the Eurovignette Directive until the end of September 2020. This is all the more serious as this regulation of toll collection for trucks on the European motorways is a central pillar for reducing CO2 emissions and protecting the population along all the European transit routes from noise and exhaust fumes.

Kaspar Schuler, Co-Managing Director of CIPRA International, is very concerned about current developments: "There is a very high danger that under the German presidency the priority will be given to new trucks with low CO2 emissions. However, there are as important demands: the effective reduction of HGV transport, its transfer from road to rail and the protection of particularly congested areas such as the Alpine regions."

Together with environmental organisations, CIPRA is calling for a substantial improvement in legislation to ease the burden on the population in transit-stricken Alpine regions.
