The Natura 2000 network plays an essential role in nature conservation in the EU, and will bring important benefits to wildlife and people. Proper management of the Natura 2000 network is essential to safeguard Europe’s biodiversity. The network will have a variety of other benefits for people and the environment. It will play an important role in maintaining our landscape and cultural heritage, and providing opportunities for recreation and tourism. Natura 2000 sites also serve a range of other functions such as water management, and many are managed for the production of food and timber. Almost all Natura 2000 sites require active management, to maintain and often to restore favourable conservation status. It is essential for the success of the network that sufficient funding is devoted to its management.
