Econnect's drive living on in recharge.green

Aug 30, 2012 / Aurelia Ullrich-Schneider
Ecological connectivity in the Alps can only be maintained if the production of renewable energy is managed in line with nature protection. Some of the Econnect partners seized the opportunity given by the last call of the Alpine Space Programme to work out a project on this issue. They were successful and "recharge.green" is about to start on 1st October.

recharge.green aims at reconciling renewable energy (RE)production and nature in the Alps. The projects' core objective is to develop tools and an integrated strategy for renewable energy production, sustainable land use systems as well as the conservation of biodiversity and soil across the Alpine region, so as to support the implementation of relevant EU Directives. It will valorise Alpine biodiversity, land use patterns and related ecosystem services, and model the carrying capacity of the Alpine ecosystems with respect to all aspects of RE production and consumption. The Econnect tool JECAMI will be used to visualize RE impacts.
Like for Econnect, the Research Institute of Wildlife Ecology of the University of Veterinary Medicine, Vienna, is lead partner. CIPRA, EURAC, the Environment Agency Austria and the Alpi Marittime Nature Park will also bring in and further develop their Econnect experiences within the new project. With a budget of 2.7 mio, of which a large part is funded under the Alpine Space Programme by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and 15 implementing partners, recharge.green will be running from October 2012 until June 2015.
