... the rapid pace of climate change in the Alps has seen two huge new residents moving to Monaco. The smallest state in the Alps, which is also a party to the Alpine Convention, is now home to its first elephants! The favourable living conditions in the Principality, the international and environmentalist commitment of the Princess and the Mediterranean climate of the Côte d'Azur all make Monaco a perfect spot for the two pachyderms, also known as Népal and Baby. They were previously kept in extremely harsh conditions in a zoo in Lyon. Animal welfare activists protested vehemently against proposals to put the animals down; a famous film star even threatened to move to Russia. Perhaps the enormous sympathy shown for these new, grey Alpine inhabitants will now also be seen for older-established denizens such as bears, lynxes or wolves?
