Outstanding architecture

Climate awareness meets aesthetics: Switzerland and Liechtenstein are awarded the “Constructive Alps” architecture prize for sustainable renovation and construction in the Alps for the fifth time.

The prize-winning buildings are textbook examples of how natural resources and innovative ideas can be used to continue the building traditions of the Alpine region in a climate-efficient way. Because “where mountains are high and slopes are steep, the consequences of climate change are changing lifestyles, landscape and architecture,” writes Köbi Gantenbein, chairman of the “Constructive Alps” jury and publisher of the magazine Hochparterre.

Projects from Switzerland and Austria shared the first three places and thus the prize money of 50,000 euros. First place went to the Agricultural Centre at Salez/CH, which sets new standards in terms of climate efficiency. Second prize goes to the assembly hall of the carpentry and joinery firm Kaufmann, in Reuthe/A: according to the jury, the extraordinary construction of the supporting structure is an excellent example of the Alpine art of building with timber. Third place went to the listed Ortstockhaus in Braunwald/CH, an icon of modernity in the Alps. Seven recognition awards and, for the first time, an honour for a public favourite all help foster sustainable projects within the entire Alpine region.

Ten years of “Constructive Alps”

The Alpine Museum in Berne/CH honours the tenth anniversary of the Architecture Prize with an extensive exhibition: “Constructive Alps – Building for Climate” not only introduces the prize winners, but also takes a look at outstanding examples from previous editions.
