The date was chosen to commemorate the creation of Europe's first national parks in Sweden on 24 May 1909, an event which has been duly celebrated since 1999. This year's motto for the event is "Youth - the future of our parks", and it highlights the centenary anniversary of national parks in Europe and the supporting role of young people for the future of nature conservation. Several protected areas in the Alpine region will also be taking part in the European Day of the Parks 2009. They include a number of Swiss park regions such as the Parc Ela in the very heart of the Grisons Canton, in the Alpine pass landscape of the Albula, Julier and Septimer, with an interesting programme of excursions conveying a wealth of knowledge on birds, snails and meadow flowers.
