ECO-ENERGY VISION FLERDEN

The mountain village of Flerden, once threatened by emigration, has taken a promising, sustainable path to the future: it promotes renewable energies and environmentally conscious building in the "energy-saving/living zone"as well as environmental education.

Objectives:

Motto: "In Flerden we care for the environment - because we only have one!" Promotion of sustainability with the long-term viability of the municipality as the objective.

Activities:

Low-priced plots for building projects with the Minergie (low-energy) standard. Building in the "energy-saving/living zone" means: insulation, solar energy and heating as well as electricity supply based on other renewable energy sources. Energy efficiency criteria are set by the municipality and regularly revised on the basis of the latest know-how. Availability of wood from municipal forests. Environmental education linked to nature: the forest as a place of learning and experience.

Results:

Wood chip heating plant Oberheinzenberg (boiler output 80 kWh, 280 cubic meters of wood chips from local forests) heats two schools, the municipal hall and the municipal offices. Solar power Schulhaus Süd (school): thermal solar power plant for hot water and supplementary heating, 36 sq. m. surface, annual output: ca. 14'500 kW. Solar energy plant Bühler-Flerden: average yearly output ca. 50'000 kWh (= electricity for 14 households) Minergie houses

Coverage of the eco-energy vision by various media (including the national media) has created a lot of publicity for the small village. Flerden is also known as the location of an innovative 'straw house' (autarchic living). The project has a strong local base. The Eco-energy Trail and the Forest as a Place of Learning are intended to further strengthen environmental consciousness.

What works in Flerden, a "typical" small mountain village, should also work in other mountain villages.
