Besides economic considerations and environmental aspects, social factors also play an important role in people’s decisions either to stay in the Alps or to move there in the first place. A functioning community system comprising health care facilities, child minding and assistance for old people, educational establishments, cultural events, etc., allows people to realise themselves and their lives within the community. All these factors contribute towards making people "feel at home" in a given location.

How can the governance capacity of individuals and communities be preserved or even improved, in both urban and rural regions? What is the significance of regional identities in this context?

In Issue 2 the Future in the Alps Project focuses on gathering and disseminating knowledge and examples of good practice relating to the aforementioned issues. The knowledge compiled is used to formulate conclusions that can be taken into account in the Population and Culture Chapter of the Alpine Convention.

A team of experts addressed these tasks. The results include an analysis report as well as databases of examples of best/good practice and the relevant publications. These results, which are available in English only, provide the "raw material" used for mediating the know-how. The experts themselves are responsible for the contents of the results.
