Restoring the web of life – Ecological networks for more biodiversity in the Alps

2011-12-15

The biological diversity of the Alps is extraordinary. To preserve this diversity, natural habitats must be interlinked, links between protected areas being particularly important. Therefore, in its protocol ‘Conservation of Nature and the Countryside’, the Alpine Convention urges the establishment of an ecological network throughout the Alps. The Ecological Continuum Initiative, the ECONNECT project and the Platform Ecological Network of the Alpine Convention have committed themselves to this objective. CIPRA is heavily involved in the three activities.

Ökologische NetzwerkeFrom lynx to tamarisk, the vision is the same: all the species of flora and fauna that constitute the natural diversity of the Alps are in good condition and benefiting from a high degree of habitat connectivity. That is the goal of the Ecological Continuum promoted by the Alpine Network of Protected Areas (ALPARC), CIPRA and the International Scientific Committee for Alpine Research (ISCAR). The three partners in the Ecological Continuum Initiative are working independently of any project deadlines or political decisions. With financial support provided in particular by the MAVA Foundation, since 2007 they focus in particuar on the following three targets: Initiating, promoting and mentoring activities; Providing know-how; Awareness-building.  More

Econnect LogoFrom August 2008 to November 2011, the ECONNECT project has built up an exemplary partnership between private and public actors under the slogan ‘Restoring the Web of Life’. ECONNECT has developed a common methodology and supported its realization at the local level in seven pilot regions. CIPRA was one of the sixteen partners in the project. ECONNECT was co-financed in the frame of the Alpine Space Programme of the EU. More

PlattformConnecting natural spaces is of key importance for the nature protection goals of the Alpine Convention, and the Ecological Network Platform has thus been established under the aegis of the Alpine Convention with the goal of supporting the creation of a cross-border alpine network of protected areas and connecting elements in particular on the political level. CIPRA contributes to the work of the Platform on the strategic as well as on the operational level.
