€100,000 for exemplary climate protection in the Alps

At a ceremony held in Bern/CH on 6 November, the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps (CIPRA) awarded prizes for outstanding climate protection to seven municipalities, businesses and organisations, the winners of its cc.alps competition held across the Alps. Weather expert Thomas Bucheli and CIPRA President Dominik Siegrist presented the prizes worth a total of €100,000.

Scientists at the Écoles Polytechniques Fédérales de Lausanne/CH and Zurich/CH have used complex computer simulations to predict that the Rhône Glacier in the Canton of Valais/CH will have disappeared by 2100.

The cc.alps competition being held across the Alps has been very well received. Individuals and organisations from all eight Alpine countries had submitted 160 climate response measures. The Swiss weather expert Thomas Bucheli and CIPRA President Dominik Siegrist will award the 7 winners on 6 November during the autumn seminar of the Hausbau- und Energiemesse [housing construction and energy trade fair] in Bern/CH.

International experts exchange know-how in Dornbirn/A

On 16-17 June an Open Space was held in Dornbirn/A on the impact of climate response measures in the Alps. More than 40 experts from different fields and countries convened at the event to share their knowledge.
Participants from Austria, Italy, Germany, Switzerland and Slovenia had an opportunity to submit different topics of discussion and debate them in small working groups. They discussed a range of topics such as energy, communication and education, artificial snow installations for ski runs, and the (un)desirable side effects of alpine climate response measures. Among those attending the event were Luca Mercalli, meteorologist from Italy; Martine Rebetez, WSL climatologist from Switzerland; Tanja Cegnar, meteorologist from Slovenia; Helga Kromp-Kolb, climatologist from Austria; Rainer Siegele, President of the Network of Municipalities "Alliance in the Alps", and Mario Broggi, representative of the MAVA Foundation. The meeting provided an opportunity for the project and its team to boost its wealth of topics and contacts, which are of great importance for the further development of cc.alps; the exchange of knowledge was particularly valuable for preparing the forthcoming youth education project.

Progress with research

For several months now the expanded cc.alps team has been broadening the project's scientific basis. The team of experts has come up with an evaluation system for objectively assessing climate response measures.
