€ 100,000 for the Climate in the Alps

Does the project, initiative or activity you’ve organised in an Alpine country make a contribution to climate protection or to adapting to the consequences of climate change? If so, you should seize this opportunity to take part in the cc.alps competition and win up to €20,000.00!

CIPRA, the International Commission for the Protection of the Alps, is awarding prizes worth a total of €100,000 for exemplary response measures which contribute to climate protection or to adapting to the consequences of climate change. The projects submitted will be posted on the internet after the closing date for the competition. The winning projects will be announced separately to the general public in autumn 2008.

The closing date is 31 July 2008.

As wealthy industrialised nations, Alpine countries are one of the key factors contributing to climate change on a global scale. Scientists have demonstrated that lessening climate change in both the medium and the long term is essential. Experience shows that the response measures taken to mitigate climate change and protect the climate are not bold enough, particularly where the public sector is concerned. As a non-governmental organisation CIPRA sees it as its task to do something about this. That is why more prizes are being awarded for measures aimed at mitigation rather than adaptation.

Through the competition, CIPRA is looking to reward and financially support those response measures implemented in the Alpine region (projects, initiatives or activities) aimed at climate protection or at adapting to the consequences of climate change which seek to harmonise ecological, social and economic interests. CIPRA wants to prevent measures being taken in the name of climate protection which would then have a negative impact on the environment or society.
The cc.alps project and the prize money for the competition are being financed by the MAVA Foundation for Nature (Montricher/CH).

Who’s eligible to take part in the competition?

Private individuals, businesses, associations, local authorities and all other organisations which implement response measures aimed at mitigating climate change or adapting to the consequences of climate change (at both valley and mountain levels) are eligible to take part. CIPRA International and the national CIPRA representatives and their employees are however excluded from participation.

What can I submit?

You can submit any mitigation or adaptation measures that are implemented within the Alpine region as defined by the territorial limits of the Alpine Convention. These measures must already have tangible implementation results. You cannot submit measures which are still at the planning or preparatory stage.
Measures eligible to be submitted:

  • Mitigation measures (climate protection): Mitigation measures are defined as measures which contribute towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions or increasing the absorption capacity of natural carbon sinks.
  • Adaptation measures: By adaptation measures we mean measures which lessen the negative impact of climate change or enhance the positive consequences of climate change.

The closing date is 31 July 2008. You may edit your contribution online up until the closing date. In exceptional cases the contributions may be submitted in digital form by post (date of receipt: 31 July 2008) or by e-mail:
CIPRA International, Aurelia Ullrich, Im Bretscha 22, Postfach 142, FL-9494 Schaan

The contributions submitted will go on-line on 7 August 2008 and be published in the language in which they are submitted.

Only those contributions that are submitted in full and in good time will be taken into account for evaluation by the Jury.

What are the prizes?

The contributions submitted will be posted on this website; that in itself is already a huge bonus for you! The winning contributions will also be made known to the general public through the awards ceremony, the press releases and other information channels.

Prize money totalling €100,000.00 has been earmarked for the winning contributions. Main prizes worth €20,000 and runner-up prizes worth €10,000 will be awarded in the categories “mitigation and adaptation measures”.
The budgeted prize money is to be used for the prize-winning contributions or for projects or activities directly related thereto. The prize money is provided from the cc.alps budget, which is financed by the MAVA Foundation for Nature (Montricher/CH).

The Jury reserves the right to award the prizes only in part or not at all, depending on the quality of the contributions submitted.

Awards ceremony

The awards ceremony is to take place on 6 November 2008.

How will the contributions to the competition be assessed?

An international Jury will assess the contributions and nominate the prize winners. The Jury is made up of members of the MAVA Foundation for Nature, of CIPRA International and other experts.

The Jury will assess the contributions according to the following criteria (see the Participation Form for details):

  • Mitigating climate change (contribution to climate protection)
  • Adapting to the consequences of climate change
  • Impact on nature and the environment
  • Impact on society
  • Impact on the economy
  • Transferability
  • Contribution to raising awareness
  • Embedding in a holistic climate strategy

The Jury’s decision shall be final and incontestable. Any recourse to courts of law shall be excluded.
