Bregenzerwälder Tracht als lebendiges Brauchtum

Since the 17th century the Bregenzerwälder costume for women has not changed in its main aspects but has just adapted to the times. It is the oldest costume in the German speaking area, however it is still lively and cannot be imagined outside the social life. It is a lively element of the living customs of the region. The production is extremely time- and cost-intensive as in the past, the necessary skills are no longer readily available.
In order to ensure its continuation, the possibility to continue to produce was ensured and included in the "Juppenwerkstatt" (costumes factory) of Riefensberg, together with a costume museum.
The Juppenwerkstatt must be managed as a lively museum. In order to give new impulse and to bring young generations closer to their own traditions, an exhibition was set up on the costly gold and silver jewel works in the costume and a video shot about the production of the expensive Bregenzerwälder women's costume. The production of the costume with its elements is connected to the seasons and strongly linked to the works of the still living craftspeople. At the same time, the video makes it possible to represent the multiple uses around wearing the costume. Since the setting up of the Juppenwerkstatt, more than 200 "Juppen" have been renovated or newly made.
