The municipality of Prato Allo Stelvio wants to achieve energetic autonomy through several plans to produce energy from renewable sources only. Prato Allo Stelvio won the award as best italian photovoltaic municipality in the Legambiente's contest . This technology covers 76% of the municipality's electric energy needs.

The plan proposes to produce energy from renewable sources toreduce the dependence on fossil fuels and, at the same time, the emission of pollutants.
The municipality has installed several photovoltaic plants, both on private and public buildings. They produce more than 1MW, an average of 353,9 kW every 1.000 inhabitants. But Prato Allo Stelvio has also realized many other types of installations to produce energy from renewable sources, like: 4 hydro-electric plants; 2 district heating systems powered by biomass; 1 biogas plant(a cooperative of about 50 members, all farmers (it's a large size plant 600 UBA); 2 wind plants.
Photovoltaic energy covers about 76% of the municipalitys energy needs including heat production (district heating), about 10.000.000 kWh/year. As a result the equivalent of 859 oil tons and 2.400 tons of CO2 are saved. Biogas plant technical data: production of 600.000 m3 biogas/year, used to produce electric and thermic energy: 3.500.000 kWh/year. Wind plant: nominal power 1,2 MW, production of 1.500.000 kWh/year. Electric energy global production (hydric and wind plants, cogeneration): 23.000.000 kWh/year (the equivalent of 5.060 tons of oil and about 14.000 tons of CO2 saved).
