Dobbiaco won the Legambiente's contest 2008 (best italian renewable municipality) covering the 111% of municipality's energy needs with energy produced from renewable sources. Thanks to a district heating system powered by biomass all the thermic energy needs have been covered (this plant in Dobbiaco supplies also the near municipality of San Candido)Furthermore, through the use of photovoltaic plants and mini-hydroelectric systems all electric energy needs have been covered.

The plan proposes to produce energy using renewable sources, reducing in this way the dependence on fossil fuels and, at the same time, the emissions of pollutants.
Installation of photovoltaic plants (178 kW installed); installation of mini-hydroelectric plants (500 kW installed); installation of district heating system powered by biomass with a power of 18 MW; Besides the central of Dobbiaco is the first thermic plant to organize visits and special school tours to show the whole cycle of wood, from the origin as raw material to the production rejects used in the central to produce energy.
Thanks to photovoltaic and mini-hydroelectric plants Dobbiaco more than covers the electric energy needs of its citizens (111%). Besides all the municipalities buildings (public and private) are linked to a district heating system powered by biomass opened in 1995, with a power of 18MW. The high thermic energy production supplies the municipalities of Dobbiaco and San Candido (connected to this net in 1999). The global volumetry heated is equal to 1.402.500 m3. Dobbiaco's central allows to save 5,63 millions litres of fuels replaced with 93.000 m3 of local woody biomass. Citizens' advantages are various: reduction of local pollution; reduction of domestic heating costs; no costs to buy, maintain and clean the domestic heating systems.
