- Abstract
- This book is a very thorough and deep treatise on conflict management in organizations. However, most of the offered insights are highly relevant to other types of conflicts as well. First of all this book is a powerful tool of conflict diagnosis, secondly it offers theoretical and practical suggestions for conflict resolution. The books target group includes professional helpers, negotiators, consultants and coaches as well as executives, staff representatives, politicians and other persons, which have to deal with frictions and conflicts within their professional life. It is certain that opposites, frictions and conflicts are part of our daily work and therefore everyone should be able to deal with conflicts in a professional and constructive way.
The book is divided into three parts: I. Conflict diagnosis; II. The dynamic of escalation; and III. Strategies of conflict interventions. A very well-known part of the book is Friedrich Glasl’s nine-stage model of conflict escalation. Rather than seeking causes in the individuals, the model emphasizes the internal logic of conflict escalation mechanism. Every step is indicated by certain forms of perception, emotion and interaction. The steps of conflict escalation range from 1 “hardening” and 2 “debates and polemics” over 5 “loss of face” to 9 “together into the abyss”. At the beginning both conflict partner have the opportunity to win (win-win-situation), at the end both will lose (lose-lose-situation).
