Abstract
Socio-economic and demographic changes have serious effects on the arrangement of social networks in rural areas. In rural areas social networks are important for the quality of life of older people because increasing age trends to lead to a shift from actively taking care of everyday life by oneself towards being dependent on external help. Besides the family above all political senior associations still represent basic columns of the quality of life today’s older people in rural areas. However, older generation of tomorrow strongly differ from those of today’s older generation. These processes have influence on the future development of social networks and particularly on the tasks and structures of the senior associations in rural areas. The results originate from a PhD. thesis which examines the influence of spatial factors on the quality of life of the older generation in different rural micro-regions in Austria.
