Abstract
The article offers a synthesis of the state of peopling of the Alps and of the actual socio-economic dynamics. Starting from an analysis of the actual situation based on the data on the town scale, which is the most appropriate one for the alpine context, Bätzing proposes a reading of the destiny of the Alps that seems to be polarised between two poles: a high concentration close to industrialised and tourist areas and areas of depopulation characterised by the presence of high quality ecosystems, but also by the abandonment of those traditional activities that contributed to the creation of that particular alpine landscape. The article is very significant in the analysis of future in the Alps since it starts from an historical perspective in the definition of new models of sustainable development.
