Abstract

The article deals with the project, promoted by IREALP, concerning the recovery of ancient rural villages located in a mountain region of Lombardy called Valtellina, that are facing a process of depopulation and degradation, and to convert them in new activities that can create economic development opportunities. In this initial phase of the project, a preliminar survey on the state of the rural villages has been carried out: 232 sites and 35 towns have been visited. Cartopgraphic and fotographic documentation has been produced for each visited site. This documentation can also help to quantify the state of abandonment in the valley. The methodology applied, the indicators choosen, the process followed and the elaboration of the datas can be transferred to other mountain regions.
