Abstract
Residential areas, industrial areas and transport infrastructure have grown strongly in Switzerland in the last decades and millions of Swiss francs have been invested in the construction and expansion of transport networks. For most big transport projects, ex-ante analyses were conducted to assess the future effects of transport infrastructure investments mainly on economy and environment, but rarely on spatial structure. However, ex-post analyses to evaluate the actual effects of transport infrastructure investments were missing at all. In 2001, the Swiss Federal Office for Spatial Development (ARE) in co-operation with other federal offices and cantons concerned, launched the overall project "Spatial effects of transport infrastructure" (Räumliche Auswirkungen der Verkehrsinfrastrukturen) to close the above mentioned knowledge gap until 2006. The project therefore aims to identify the spatial effects of transport infrastructure.
