Abstract
This paper focuses on the part of second homes in rural areas and reminds the relevancy of this phenomenon to understand the complex relations between second homes, rural and urban societies and local territories. It indeed refers to various social and demographic aspects of rural areas, and the way they’re currently evolving. On the basis of four anthropological studies in Hautes-Pyrénées, Aubrac, the Ardèche plateau and the Vendée coast completed with by recent statistics and document analysis, the authors explore the hypothesis of a “secondary residential culture”, under construction with the development and the renewal of the cultural meanings and the uses of second homes.
