Abstract
The volume offers an interesting and useful survey of the main indicators used to measure the tourist phenomenon (fluxes, presences, seasons, etc.) and its effects on the environment. A detailed description, an analysis on future trends and a useful bibliography have been elaborated for each macro-indicator. The volume is very significant for the richness of the 60 indicators defined (elaborated for the French national context) and divided in driving force-state-response for different tourism typologies. In particular, mountain tourism (pp. 168-198) is analysed both through traditional indicators and through specific indicators such as the characterization of the tourist attractiveness of mountain regions (presence of historical monuments, of natural reserves and zones etc.), the management of waste in the alpine refuges, alpine skiing etc. The methodologies contained in the volume can be applied in other alpine contexts and they are useful for the comparison between positive and negative aspects of tourism, which is one of the most important economic resources of mountain regions and that has to be planned following the indicators of sustainability.
