Abstract
In the last 30 years mountain regions, not only the Italian one, have often been considered as regions of emigration, depopulation and ageing. These three stereotyped images do not correspond completely to reality anymore. Recent researches have demonstrated that, nowadays, it is more correct to adopt the image of “leopard’s spot” while referring to mountain regions. It is true that some mountain areas are still characterized by depopulation, ageing, cultural isolation and lack of human resources; but it is also true that there are other mountain areas in which the process of depopulation has turned into commuting, where a phase of gradual repopulation has started and where the local economy is being revitalized. The book is divided into four parts and begins with some general considerations about the regional value added produced in mountain regions. The first part of the book classifies the different mountain towns according to their socio-economic characteristics. The second part measures the richness product in mountain regions using two method of analysis. The third part is dedicated to the policies for mountain regions and the forth part presents five good practice examples. The publication is very significant fot Q1 because it contains a valid methodology to assess the regional value added that can be applied to any mountain region.
