Abstract
Expecially in view of the EU enlargement in 2004 the development of the traffic and transport infrastructure and its opportunities, limits, possibilities and effects have become a vital and decisive topic for economies and the quality of life in Austria's border regions. Thorough regional area policies and innovative logistics with regard to the transport of goods will play a material role in preventing that the expansion of infrastructure brings about unnecessary traffic growth with all its negative effects on health and the environment, on the provision of mobility and economy. The publication has a focus on the corresponding economic issues. It analyses the outcomes and consequences of regional planning and infrastructure expansion, and outlines potentials and positive development strategies to increase the quality of life an benefit the economy.
