- Abstract
- The author discusses advantages and limits of mediation as a conflict resolution instrument. He highlights the importance of analysing and challenging adequately the fundamentals of a conflict. A sense for justice, neutrality and confidentiality are indispensable elements of a successful mediating process. Thereby, a mediator has to be aware of his limited means and information basis to understand and govern the conflict. Therefore, the author calls for openess regarding to contents and application of instruments during a mediation. Concluding, he states the limited awareness of mediation within other scientific disciplines or policy fields (e.g. psychology, medicine) and claims its further development and its integration in the everyday practice of resolving social conflicts.
