Abstract
Participation is an adventure! The measures and results of citizens’ cooperation projects can be designed but at the same time they are always surprising. The research and practical results of the project TRANSPARENT gave the reason to write a “guidebook” related to this topic. The first part of the publication • defines the term participation, • describes the history and development of this form of direct democracy, • illuminates the role of participation in representative democracies and • gives a survey of possible consequences. The publication describes primarily informal participation procedures which are not regulated by law. The second part of the publication • assists in dealing with a concrete case, • offers directions, • gives a survey of well-established citizens participation methods and their fields of application and • gives tips which can be helpful for the implementation of a participation project. The publication shall encourage the readers to go hit the road of participation and to use this guidebook for orientation in order to design participation projects in a successful way. You may be sure that participation is a way worthwhile to go!
